Wayne State University head volleyball coach Ernie Gilbert announced the signings of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for fall 2007.
Maureen MacDonald, a native of White Lake, was a two-year letterwinner for Marian High School, earning all-area (third team in 2006, first team in 2007), all-region, and all-state (honorable mention) accolades. She served as team captain her senior season and was named the team's Most Valuable Player.
Mariel VanOverbeke was a three-year volleyball letterwinner at Anchor Bay High School, earning all-county and all-region honors as a senior as well as Honorable Mention All-MAC Red and All-Blue Water Conference recognition. The Chesterfield native served as team captain and was named Anchor Bay's best blocker and best teammate.
Milford native Katy Westenberg was a tri-sport athlete at Milford High School, earning three letters in volleyball as well as four in track and field and two in basketball. She collected all-conference, all-district, and all-region volleyball honors in 2006-07 while leading the team to a second place finish and setting single-season school records for sets (2817), sets per game, and assists (1165). A two-year varsity captain, she was named the team's Most Improved Player in 2005-06 and MVP her senior season. Westenberg, who plans to major in psychology at WSU, also holds the Milford school record for the 4x100, 4x200, and sprint medley events, and finished 11th in the distance medley at the Nike Outdoor Nationals.
These three signees will help to offset the loss of departed seniors Michelle Bittner, Kristen Buter, Kristi Pieper, and Holly Soldenski.
