Volleyball Seniors Honored By GLIAC

ALLENDALE, Mich. - A pair of Wayne State senior volleyball players earned All-GLIAC honors, released the league office Friday evening in conjunction with the league's tournament banquet in Allendale. Elisa Joris (Walled Lake, Mich./Western) was selected to the First Team All-GLIAC as Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) rounded out her career with an Honorable Mention All-GLIAC award.

Joris, a 2004 Second Team All-GLIAC and 2002 Honorable Mention selection, led the league and was second in the nation in blocks at 1.79 per game. A three-time GLIAC Player of the Week choice, the middle blocker was also fourth in the conference in kills (4.18) and in aces (0.41).

Smolen finished her four-year career with

Megan Smolen recorded 1,200 kills in her four seasons at WSU.


1,200 kills, 3,647 total attempts and 1,263 digs. She also holds the single-match record for attempts with 80 at Gannon on Sept. 19, 2003. Smolen also recorded 12 double-doubles this season as she averaged 2.96 kills and 3.21 digs per game.

Northwood University sophomore outside hitter Gorana Maricic was named 2005 GLIAC Player of the Year. Northern Michigan University's Nicole Hintze was tabbed Freshman of the Year, while Grand Valley State's Alyson Riley earned Libero of the Year honors. GVSU's Deanne Scanlon was named Coach of the Year by her peers.

The Warriors finished the season with a 16-10 record as they made their first postseason appearance since 1999.
