SALISBURY, Md. - Wayne State's women's cross country team began the 2003 season where last year left off. The Warriors escaped with a four-point team victory at the Seagull Opener on Saturday, August 30, in Salisbury, Maryland.

Last season, the Warriors finished ninth at the Division II NCAA Championship, their highest finish ever. Saturday, WSU had five of the top 10 runners led by redshirt senior Amy Averill's (Detroit, Mich./Southfield Christian) second-place time of 22:54.20. Freshmen Faith Kejbou (Warren, Mich./Fitzgerald) and Jenni Culbertson (Clinton Twp., Mich./Dakota) made an immediate impact in their first collegiate run. Kejbou finished fifth while Culbertson was seventh in the 6k race.

The WSU scoring was rounded out by the Moncion sisters. Redshirt junior Renee Moncion (Washington, Mich./Romeo) placed ninth (23:30.70) and sophomore Melissa Moncion (Washington, Mich./Romeo) was 10th (23:31.52).

The Warriors' next meet is the Running Fit-UDM Invitational Sept. 6 in Northville, Michigan.
