Women's Cross Country Places Fifth At Iowa Invitational

Iowa City, Iowa - The Wayne State University women's cross country team ran in the 2005 Hawkeye Open hosted by the University of Iowa Friday night. The 3k race was held at the Ashton Cross Country Course.

The Warriors placed fifth out of seven schools despite being the only non-Division I institution participating.

Freshman Rachelle Malette (Windsor, Ont./Holy Names) led the Warriors with an eighth-place finish in a time of 10:55. Iowa's Meghan Armstrong took top honors with a time of 10:25.

Also running well for WSU were junior Jenni Culbertson (Clinton Twp., Mich./Dakota), who placed 15th in a time of 11:06. Senior Melissa Moncion (Washington, Mich./Romeo) was 32nd (29th in team scoring) in a time of 11:29.

Freshman Laura Friedman (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Salem) placed 36th (32nd in team scoring) in a time of 11:36. Sophomore Kara Kessler (Ionia, Mich./Ionia) was 49th (40th in team scoring) in a time of 11:57.

Also competing for Wayne State were freshman Teresa Sabin (Lowell, Mich./Saranac) who placed 51st in a time of 12:06, and junior Sarah Kearfott (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson), who placed 52nd in a time of 12:08. Junior Faith Kejbou (Warren, Mich./Fitzgerald) was 56th in a time of 12:48.

The next competition for WSU is Saturday, Sept. 10 in the Detroit/Tommy Titan Invitational.
