BLACKSBURG, Va. - Led by two top-10 finishes, the WSU women's cross country team placed third at the Virginia Tech Festival in the Fields to begin its season on Saturday, Sept. 4 in Blacksburg, Va. Wayne State, with 71 points, trailed just the host Hokies (34) and Liberty University (41). Junior Melissa Moncion (Washington, Mich./Romeo) finished 22 seconds behind the overall leader with a fourth-place time of 15:07.89 in the 4k race. The 2003 GLIAC Freshman of the Year, Jenni Culbertson (Clinton Twp., Mich./Dakota), placed ninth with a 15:30.80 time. Junior Stephanie Sayler (Romeo, Mich.) posted a time of 16:01.37 for 18th place and sophomore Faith Kejbou (Warren, Mich./Fitzgerald) ran a 21st-place time of 16:10.62. Freshman Meghan Wafer (Redford, Mich./Thurston) finished in 28th place (16:39.32) in her first collegiate race, while Leah Steinke (Windsor, Ont./Kennedy CI) was right behind Wafer in 29th (16:42.52). Freshman Kara Kessler (Ionia, Mich.) finished in 33rd place in a time of 16:52.46. The Warriors will participate in the Running Fit-Detroit Mercy Invitational on Sept. 11.
