Edwardsville, Ill. - The women of Wayne State cross country finished second at the Cross Country Only Nationals in Edwardsville, Ill, on Saturday. WSU had 61 points, behind San Jose State University (30).
Freshman Rachelle Malette (Windsor, Ont./Holy Names) was the top-finishing Warrior in the 6k race, placing second with a time of 22:28. It marks Malette's best finish of the season and her fourth top-10 finish in as many races.
Junior Jenni Culbertson (Clinton Twp., Mich./Dakota) continued her string of good performances as well, placing fourth with a time of 22:52. Senior Melissa Moncion (Washington, Mich./Romeo), winner of this race in 2004, took sixth place in 23:18. Rounding out the top 20 was junior Leah Steinke (Windsor, Ont./Kennedy Collegiate Institute) with a time of 24:28.
Also running for the Warriors were redshirt junior Sarah Kearfott (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson), who placed 29th in 25:12, freshman Teresa Sabin (Lowell, Mich./Saranac) with a 34th-place finish in 25:22, and junior Faith Kejbou (Warren, Mich./Fitzgerald), who finished 41st in 25:47.
Wayne State was the top finisher among the six Division II teams. The Warriors will next run in the Paul Short Invitiational on Saturday, Oct. 1, in Bethlehem, Pa.
