EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Wayne State women's cross country team won the 6000-meter Cross Country Only Nationals hosted by Saint Louis University on Saturday, September 25. The Warriors competed against nine other teams in the meet, including five Division I programs.
The Warriors totaled 16 points in the Non-Division I group and were followed by Fort Lewis with 60 points, Edgewood with 75 points, and Lake Forest with 86 points. The Warriors had the lowest team race average in the event with a time of 22:40.04 and were followed by Creighton University with a 23:12.67 average and Evansville University with a 23:48.73 average.
WSU junior Melissa Moncion (Washington, Mich./Romeo) won the race with a school-record time of 21:44.35, bettering Shelly Vickery's old mark of 21:50.99. It was the second race victory for Moncion this season. WSU sophomore Jenni Culbertson (Clinton Twp., Mich./Dakota) finished in third with a time of 22:07.71.
Faith Kejbou (Warren, Mich./Fitzgerald) finished in seventh place in a time of 22:55.54. Sophomore Leah Steinke (Windsor, Ont./Kennedy CI) took ninth place in a time of 23:10.42.
Freshman Meghan Wafer (Redford, Mich./Thurston) finished 11th in a time of 23:22.17. Also finishing strong for the Warriors was senior Renee Moncion (Romeo, Mich.), who finished in 17th place in a time of 23:51.41, and Kara Kessler (Ionia, Mich.), who finished in 23rd place with a time of 24:02.31.
The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday, October 2, when they compete at the Lock Haven Invitational in Lock Haven, Pa.
