Rochester, Mich. - The Wayne State University women's cross country team participated in the 6k portion of the 2007 Michigan Intercollegiate and placed second with 68 points, just seven points behind champion Grand Valley.
Junior Rachelle Malette (Windsor, Ont./Holy Names) continued her impressive season winning the race in a time of 22:09.5, more than 1:20 head of the second-place finisher.
Freshman Lauren Kessler (Ionia, Mich.) was 11th in a time of 24:10.4, while graduate student Tracy Egnatuk (Albion, Mich.) was 14th (24:16.3).
Also running for WSU were: senior Kara Kessler - 18th (24:36.4), freshman Brittany Colley (Ionia, Mich.) - 24th (25:03.1), freshman Kristi Werner (East Jordan, Mich.) - 27th (25:17.0), freshman Annie Magin (Richland, Mich./Gull Lake) - 29th (25:22.1).
Not figuring in the top seven were: freshman Allison Wykle (Trenton, Mich.) - 25:36.0, junior Nicole Widak (Canton, Mich./Salem) - 26:06.1, and redshirt sophomore Laura Friedman (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Salem) - 26:58.4.
Behind GVSU and the Warriors were Saginaw Valley (112), Cornerstone (123), Siena Heights (123), Albion (149), Calvin (165), Spring Arbor (179), Northwood (207), Lansing C.C. (252), Jackson C.C. (261) and Alma (309).
Wayne State is idle until running in the GLIAC Championship on Oct. 20 at Pleasant Ridge Park in Fairview, Pa.
