Erie, Pa. - The Wayne State University women's cross country team placed second out of 13 schools at the 2007 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship Saturday at Pleasant Ridge Park in Girard, Pa.
Grand Valley won the team championship with 20 points, while the Warriors claimed second place with 82 points. Ferris State was third with 129 points and was followed by Saginaw Valley (135), Northern Michigan (165), Findlay (173), Hillsdale (183), Lake Superior (210), Ashland (241), Northwood (242), Michigan Tech (257), Gannon (313) and Mercyhurst (316)
Junior Rachelle Malette (Windsor, Ont./Holy Names) earned her second consecutive First Team All-GLIAC honors after winning the meet in a time of 22:00.17. Second place finisher Kelly Gibbons of Grand Valley was exactly 35 seconds behind Malette.
Freshman Lauren Kessler (Ionia, Mich.) earned Second Team All-GLIAC honors with a time of 23:23.19 for 14th place (eight through 14 are Second Team All-League).
Helping Wayne State to its best finish ever at the conference meet were freshman Allison Wykle (Trenton, Mich.), graduate student Tracy Egnatuk (Albion, Mich.) and senior Kara Kessler (Ionia, Mich.). Wykle was 23rd (23:47.52), while Egnatuk was 26th (23:55.70) and Kessler was 28th (23:59.33).
Also competing for WSU were Brittany Colley (42nd - 24:30.25), Annie Magin (80th - 25:42.28), Laura Friedman (86th - 26:00.25) and Nicole Widak (91st - 26:10.41).
The next meet for Wayne State will be the NCAA Great Lakes Regional at SIU-Edwardsville on Saturday, Nov. 3 with a berth at the NCAA Championship on the line.
