Ishpeming, Mich. - The Wayne State University women's cross country team finished seventh out of 13 schools at the 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship held on October 22 at Al Quaal in Ishpeming, Michigan.

Grand Valley won the team title with 23 points, while Northern Michigan was second (73). The host Wildcats were followed by Ferris State (106), Hillsdale (107), Michigan Tech (131), Ashland (207) and Wayne State (223). Behind WSU were Lake Superior (235), Findlay (252), Saginaw Valley (261), Mercyhurst (286), Gannon (319) and Northwood (325).

WSU's team performance was hindered with the loss of three runners for the meet (Laura Friedman, Kara Kessler and Rachelle Malette).

GVSU's Mandi Zemba won the 6000m race in a time of 22:14.0. Wayne State was led by junior Jenni Culbertson (Clinton Twp., Mich./Dakota), who placed 11th in a time of 24:00.7.

Senior Melissa Moncion (Washington, Mich./Romeo) was 30th (24th in team scoring) with a time of 25:10.3. Junior Leah Steinke (Windsor, Ont./Kennedy C.I.) was 52nd (41st in team scoring) in a time of 25:57.1.

Also running well for WSU was junior Sarah Kearfott (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson), who placed 90th (64th in team scoring) with a time of 27:25.8, and junior Faith Kejbou (Warren, Mich./Fitzgerald) who was 124th (83rd in team scoring) in a time of 29:02.6..

The next competition for Wayne State will be the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 5 at the Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.
